Writing daily is hard. Actually, it might be more accurate to say the prospect of writing daily can be daunting. Life tends to happen: college assignments pile up, work becomes a vacuum for all your remaining free time, friends struggle while watching you struggle, and if you have children, bless your little soul. Somehow, you’ve managed to make it to this blog alive and read the first few lines above. For your efforts, I’m rewarding you with a handful of writing prompts. 25 of them to be exact.

  1. Write a story in which a broken coffee maker has a huge impact on the world around it.
  2. “I don’t think that person knows how sandwiches are supposed to work.”
  3. Suction, cabal, imbue, vanquish, licentious, dulcet, reverie.
  4. Describe in concrete terms how “curiosity suffers.”
  5. What are the top 12 things you can buy with your last $20?
  6. Create a news story with this headline ” Beer Crazed Elephants Face Execution.”
  7. Write a story beginning or ending with the line: I hoped they remembered the old adage, “Don’t shoot the messenger.”
  8. Think of a memory that involves a piece of music: a popular song that you always sang along to, a lullaby, a TV show or movie theme, a melody that you or someone you knew played on an instrument, a song you sang on the way to camp, or in church. Describe the events, people, or emotions that you associate with that piece of music.
  9. Think of all the meanings and expressions that relate to the word “light.” Here are some examples: light as a feather, light bulb, light on her feet, light-headed, neon, incandescent, bright, burnt out, light the way. Play with these until one of them leads you to a story or poem.
  10. I never would have married you if I’d have known __________. (And then write a story that follows it.)
  11. Tell the story of Halloween from the perspective of a piece of candy.
  12. A zombie plague breaks out on the Titanic.
  13. What should the rules be for outer space?
  14. Every day you wake up in the same bed of the same house, but the world outside is always different.
  15. When someone’s heart breaks, so does a piece of our world; this creates fissures, valleys, and even cracks in the pavement. Tell the story behind the Grand Canyon.
  16. The Everything Library lends not only books, but anything a person might need for a little while. Today, you’re borrowing a grandmother.
  17. You live in two different universes. Each time you go to sleep in one, you wake up in the other. Now that it’s your 18th birthday, you must choose one.
  18. You are the Aliens coming to Earth. What do you see?
  19. The shoe factory runs out of glass slippers, so Cinderella goes barefoot.
  20. You’re standing in a forest, when suddenly a _____ falls out of the sky.
  21. A man born without a soul has to seek shelter in a seminary.
  22. A city that literally never sleeps slowly descends into chaos.
  23. Scientists discover the moon is falling closer to Earth and want to build a bridge.
  24. Dictionary Definition: Open up a dictionary to a random word. Define what that word means to you.
